The LDR Syndrome.

Sometimes like a trifle drop of water, thoughts sneak into our mind and while we continue to contemplate on it; the realisation seeks into us and we crash onto the hard reality that the moment is bygone and will never come back. We move on with life, laugh, smile, pretend as if we are unaffected but deep inside, the pounding of the heart incessantly goes on. We remain bruised, remain wounded by our self-inflicted cuts and still put up a jolly face. This pace of the world’s development, this quick as a lightening connectivity to anywhere in the world, humans’ ever increasing nerve to surprise himself with his adventurous passions does not wash out that part of slowing down and trying to conquer that one emotion we all have a weakness for: Love. We might be a stone, a nonchalant brooder, a loner, a pretending busy couch-potato or even a simple day-to-day traveller traversing to meet his destination but we all are victims, warriors, survivors, rulers, friends and foes of this emotion called love.

Long has the time gone when normally a next door neighbour, a classmate would be the subject of love. There was a time when writing letters was considered sacred and all emotions were poured into it. Times when you could meet whenever you wanted. It is prevalent now too but Love has learnt that there are no boundaries. She has learnt that there are no limits made by humans; no margins set by society that can make it budge. She has experienced the spicy, fiery flavour of Long Distance relationship. With the advent of internet and e-mail, it slowly started to make a simple meeting of two strangers into a serious proposition. They started exchanging mails, started putting all their emotions, faith into that piece of written composition. They marvelled at the mere voice that could send tingles down their spine while talking, started devoting their minds and hearts generously thinking about their beloved, waited patiently till they would meet next. As if to boost their love and passion; social networking sites came by. They became adept in Instant Messaging, Video Conferencing, sending photos, writing their emotions bare and raw, sharing the basest secrets. When they met, passion and emotions rode high and they made the most memorable moments of them. All seemed well. Commitment and communication sore higher than distance in this kind of relationships.

Through the Life span of this world...
What if the World Shuns us...
Will you be there with me...
As my Soulmate and Eternal Support???
All until, discrepancies crept in. it started with the basest of issues like not picking up a call or not replying quick enough. Sure enough, that was dealt with quick enough and love made them get accustomed to it. They thought it is such a trivial matter compared to their strong love and soon enough it WAS a small matter to not pick up calls and not reply to mails and messages. It is an understatement to mention that people in Long distance relationship be possessive. Possessiveness is good but when it gets to an excess, it boomerangs at the very people who put their trust into it. It hangs on their head as a dagger ready to pierce into their hearts. This marks the first symptom of Long Distance Relationship (LDR) Syndrome. You demand minute descriptions of their whereabouts, want to know the sex-ratio of every place they go, mark boundaries for them on their interaction with the opposite sex. But this is the first symptom and so it is not paid much heed for “Love alone Suffices”.

But the next blow is not far away. The irony creeps in slowly. What was termed cute in the beginning becomes annoying now. The communication barrier starts to form its wall using all the bricks of fights, ego, mistrust and misunderstandings. But they continue to remain oblivious to it; for they are busy building their defences. What was earlier a soothing word or sentence turns into scorching words now. But yes, still they survive for love normally in this case is beyond mere touches and kisses; it is beyond meeting each other and confessing their love all over again. It’s a test of patience, of faith, of endurance and of sublime adjustments. It is because of this subconscious rule set that it continues to thrive.
A normal human being should never be rated on the basis of estimation. He learns quickly and adjusts as quick as a chameleon camouflages itself. But the insecurity, the feeling of being ignorant of the other’s whereabouts’ suddenly starts to sink in. The trust that was built in a matter of few weeks or months starts to crumble down in mere days. The situations start to change, priorities change and a sudden hollowness starts to sink in. As Hugh Laurie put in, “Everybody Lies.” so do they! And the dedication showed in the beginning starts to fade. They sometimes start cheating for they get tired of seeing people in love around them. Out of insecurity, they start suspecting on their partners. They give excuses, throw tantrums, become irrational over illogical things, become over possessive and start trying to control their partners whom instead they should have been helping to bloom.

Situations worsen and sours start to itch. The wounds no longer get healed by those lovable words and everything seems to end. They seem to be in dire straits of what to do: whether to call off or still hope. They long for things to get better, they long for those days when they were careful and apprehensive of the other’s feelings, when things and reactions were not so obvious but mostly they long for them to be there. But sadly, more and more issues come up. In this world, where everybody is racing, the realisation that career is important seems to sink them and that crushes the relationship.

But even after that, when they call it off; is the relationship over? The feelings don’t change, the longing to talk and care doesn’t change. Long after it is gone, the reminiscent of all those dialogs spoken, of all that was done remains and that continues to freshen up every now like a passing thought, like a déjà vu! They try to move on, earnestly want to absorb the advice given to them for their own good but it’s seem as if a curse has befallen them. It’s like the dust that keeps coming through the window and forms a layer on the surface no matter how many times you clean it; it just lies there and when you don’t clean it for a while, it piles up and just like that: the wounds resurface with itching freshness and all the time that was taken in healing is lost in seconds.

They say forbidden fruit tastes sweetest. Though LDR is not forbidden but it does seem to have a “Enter at your own risk” tag. It’s not about being in one but it’s about having faith and trust in the other person, being practical and understand the perks and the disadvantages of such a relationship, being understanding and adjusting to keep the relationship going and most of all making the other person realise that it is worth the wait. Nevertheless, sometimes even these are not enough and they are affected by LDR Syndrome. In that case, they should not loose their faith, not become pessimistic for just like the few pieces of diamond that is found among rocks; there are few good people still existing in this world. There have been LDRs which do live despite everything and that is only because of their undying commitment towards the other.

For: “Love is a beautiful thing. It comes with hurt, it comes with pain but there is always sunshine after the rain.”
